Appendix G - Advertising
See rule 79. This appendix shall not be changed by Sailing Instructions
or prescriptions by national authorities. When governmental
requirements conflict with parts of it, those requirements apply.
G1 Definition of Advertising
For the purposes of this appendix, advertising is the name,
logo, slogan, description, depiction, a variation or distortion
thereof, or any other form of communication that promotes an
organization, person, product, service, brand or idea so as
to call attention to it or to persuade persons or organizations
to buy, approve or otherwise support it.
G2 General
G 2.1 Advertisements
and anything advertised shall meet generally accepted moral
and ethical standards.
G 2.2 This appendix
shall apply when racing and, in addition, unless otherwise stated
in the notice of race, from 0700 on the first race day of a
regatta until the expiry of the time limit for lodging protests
following the last race of the regatta.
G 2.3 An event
shall be designated Category A, B or C in its notice of race
and Sailing Instructions, but if not so designated it shall
be Category A. After the notice of race has been published,
the category shall not be changed within ninety days before
the event without prior approval of the national authority of
the organizing authority.
G 2.4 A national
authority may prescribe rules for advertising that are more
restrictive than those of a category. For a particular event,
the notice of race and the Racing Instructions or the rules
of a class may include rules for advertising that are more restrictive
than those of the event's category.
G 2.5 Advertisements
on sails shall be clearly separated from national letters and
sail numbers.
G 2.6 When, after
finding the facts, a protest committee decides that a board
has broken a rule of this appendix, the protest committee shall
;
(a) warn the board that further infringement
will result in disqualification; or
(b) disqualify the board in accordance
with rule 64.1; or
(c) disqualify the board from more than
one race or from the series when it decides that the infringement
warrants a stronger penalty; or
(d) act under rule 69.1 when it decides
that there may have been a gross breach.
G 2.7 The ISAF,
a national authority or a class association may, for its events,
subject to rule G5, designate the category and may require a
fee for doing so.
G 2.8 The ISAF
or a national authority may, for its events, prescribe rules
and require a fee for giving consent to individual boards for
advertisements, provided that such consents do not conflict
with, when relevant, class rules.
G3 Category A
G 3.2 Advertising
on boards is permitted only as follows:
(a) The insignia or logo of the board
manufacturer may be displayed on the sail above the sail numbers.
(b) One sailmaker's mark, which may
include the name or mark of the sailcloth manufacturer and the
pattern or model of the sail, may be displayed on both sides
of the sail. No part of such mark shall be placed farther from
the tack than 20% of the length of the foot of the sail, including
the mast sleeve. The mark may also be displayed on the lower
half of the part of the sail above the wishbone but no part
of it shall be farther than 50 cm from the clew.
(c) The board's type or manufacturer's
name or logo may be placed on the hull in two places and on
the upper third of the part of the sail above the wishbone.
One maker's mark may be displayed on spars, on each side of
small equipment and on a competitor's clothing and harness.
(d) The organizing authority of a sponsored
event may permit or require the display of an advertisement
of the event sponsor on both sides of the sail between the sail
numbers and the wishbone and on a bib worn by the competitor.
For an event of a class association, such advertising requires
approval by the class association and, when it so prescribes,
by the national authority concerned. Notice of such permission
or requirement shall be included in the notice of race and the
Sailing Instructions.
